About David Craig

The late artist David Craig, one of Canada’s most talented and respected artists and illustrators was born in Saskatchewan but grew up in Ottawa Ontario where he attended an art oriented highschool as well as Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto (OCAD). Craig developed his keen fascination with the depiction of Canadian history.

David has worked with a wide variety of clientele such as Harlequin, Reader’s Digest, Chatelaine, Marquee and multiple other publications. Organizations he has worked with range from the NHL, CFL, Worldwide Embassies, Molson and has even designed coins for the Royal Canadian Mint which includes the sesquicentennial silver dollar. He has also created a series of paintings commemorating Canada’s contribution during World War II.

David Craig’s artistic expression is characterized by a close attention to detail and accuracy. It has been said that Craig spent as much time researching his subjects as creating his impressive pieces.

David’s work has been celebrated publicly at the O’Keefe Center in Toronto. He was the first illustrator to have a one-man art exhibition at this prestigious location. This exhibit featured over 200 illustrations and spanning fifteen years of work and remained on display for a month longer than scheduled in response to public demand. The highly successful retrospective of this artists’ works is one testament to his artistic legacy. Viewers were able to enjoy the unique style, detail and bold colour combinations that has distinguished his work for many years.

David Craig received the 2003 James Madison Book Award for his artwork in the children’s book, First to Fly: How Wilbur and Orville Wright Invented the Airplane . This American award has brought international attention, including praise from Lynne Cheney, wife of American Vice President Richard Cheney. First to Fly, has been celebrated as a detailed and imaginative tribute to American history.

A treasured Canadian and international talent, Mr. Craig remained committed to artistic communication and expression.
